Any suggestions for London culture this month?

I have the day off this coming Friday, and had been hoping to use some of it to do some culture this month. I'd got it all planned, where to go and what to see, but last night I checked the website of the two places (over the road from each other so I thought I'd get 2 for the price of 1) and found that one of them is having building work so will be closed for the next several weeks, so I will probably aim for May for them instead. But - where can I go instead? Main criteria this month (sorry to sound mercenary) is that it has to be free, as having spent yesterday going through my finances I now know for certain (rather than just suspecting) that things are a bit tight till payday. And I'd like to go somewhere a bit different - not one of the big museums or galleries, but somewhere a bit more off the beaten track. I'm open to suggestions ... over to you.

I watched another great film last night, another one that I bought a while ago and have only just got round to actually watching. This time it was "Buena Vista Social Club", the story of those wonderful old Cuban musicians, their individual stories interspersed with lots of footage of concerts and recording studios. I'd had some of the CDs (Ibrahim Ferrer, BVSC, Ruben Gonzales) for ages and love the music, so it was great to get some of the stories behind the artists, as well as watch some of the lesser known (but equally amazing) musicians. Cuba's definitely high on my list of places I need to see - I know it has terrible problems, and the place is quite run down, but there's a vibrancy and colour and life there as well (as personified in the music) that is so compelling. Too bad I can't go there for this month's culture, but finances permitting I will get there one day!
