Culture, books, birthdays and house selling

It's been a hectic few days. A couple of days ago I did this month's culture, this time to the lovely Museum of Garden History next door to Lambeth Palace, in the grounds of the former church of St Mary-at-Lambeth. It's quite a compact little museum, and had a small extra exhibition about the life of Captain Bligh (who is buried in the churchyard) of the "Bounty" (Mutiny thereof) fame. It also has a lovely little knot garden which was very tranquil despite the juggernauts thundering past the other side of the garden wall (a similar effect to the Tibetan Peace Garden in the grounds of the Imperial War Museum which is also right by a main road). I was most impressed with the gift shop - one of the most important parts of any museum in my opinion - which had a ton of books I could have bought (though I contented myself with just one) and lots of other lovely garden-related stuff. I'll post up my own photos of the museum's garden a bit later.

After that I popped next door to the Palace (as one does!) as a friend works there and we headed to lunch at an Italian restaurant where I think I undid all the dietary good I'd done earlier in the week and ratcheted up goodness knows how many weightwatchers points. Oh well, it was delicious, so I'm not going to feel too bad about it!

And then I nipped up the motorway in time for my mum's birthday yesterday. She spent the day cleaning my car :D oops, oh well what are mums for anyway? She said she enjoyed her day anyway, and I think she enjoyed having me there. She has a birthday with a 0 on the end next year, so we'll have to get plotting to do something a bit more special. Though quite how she's going to top car-washing I can't imagine.

Back today in time to tidy the house prior to some viewings by prospective buyers, then out for a quick cup of poncey tea with a friend from my former church who is moving to Bath this afternoon (after many many months of house buying and selling nightmares). I've had one lot of viewers round already (they loved it which was such a relief, and I think there will be an offer from them) and am waiting on one other who was supposed to be here an hour ago and who phoned a few minutes ago to say she's just leaving. Sigh. It's all go here.

When she's gone I will retrieve all my mounds of paperwork from the spare room wardrobe where they have been unceremoniously dumped and get my head round the funding application and the house selling. It never rains but it pours.

And as for my new favourite super-hero? Captain Underpants (fighting valiantly for Truth, Justice and all that is Pre-Shrunk and Cottony) was great, and I enjoyed it so much I read the follow-up too, Captain Underpants and the Attack of the Talking Toilets. How fantastic is that for a book title? Quote of the book has to come from the end of chapter 11:

" "Gosh," said Harold. "In one day we've had detention, suspension and we've created an army of evil talking toilets who want to take over the world."
"That's a pretty bad day, even by our standards," said George.
"Oh well," said Harold. "I just hope things don't get any worse."

CHAPTER 12 - THINGS GET WORSE "

I can't believe I'm applying to do a PhD.
