Don't give up the day job

I'm godmother to two lovely boys, one locally (I was birth partner at his and his sister's births) who is 8 and one a bit further afield, the son of a friend from uni (the first time I went to uni!) who is coming up for 3. When my uni friend asked me the other year to be Luke's godmother I did warn her, after my experiences with Jesse, that I'm a rubbish godmother and am hopeless at remembering important things like birthdays even when they're written down. I do pray for them every so often, but not as often as I should I don't think. Anyway, I decided to be all organised this year and shop today for Jesse's birthday tomorrow. Except that I've just checked the diary and discovered it was yesterday. Ooops. Oh well, I'm sure he won't mind the present opening being strung out a bit. I don't think I'm quite ready to become a professional godmother yet though - the boys will just have to make do with the hapless amateur version they have at the moment!

In other news, I received today the unconditional offer from the university for the PhD place. All I have to do is get the funding (which sounds so simple when written down like that, I can't believe it's such a melodrama in real life, is it this tortured and drawn-out for everyone else I wonder?). Also, for the first time since I've been here, the application for the housing association's garden of the year competition arrived before the closing date, and I'm quite tempted. It would give me the boost to really look after and finish the garden in the last time I have here, and would be a great way to say goodbye to the part of the house that I'll miss the most.

As well as getting the birthday present I also bought a ton of stuff from the health food shop. I've decided that I'm going to do a 28 day detox programme, which means no chocolate, no alcohol, no wheat or dairy or caffeine either, but lots of fresh fruit and veg, herb teas, grains and pulses, and (the best thing) huge portions. It is going to take a bit of planning, but there are some absolutely delicious looking soup recipes, and although I'll reintroduce everything after the 28 days I think it will be good to get into healthier eating habits (as opposed to eating lots of crap, which is my current eating habit by and large). I may well be moaning here about rice milk on my wheat-free muesli though, and I guess I'd better start praying now against spots and halitosis. You have been warned - I start a week on Monday (just after I get back from the IoW)!
