Diary of a detox diet - days 12 and 13

Yesterday: more of the same. Big news (possibly more wishful thinking) was that I glanced in the mirror and think that my cellulite may be disappearing! So that's good.

Today was my first real challenge - detoxing while out so not entirely in control of what's available to eat. I went to Gloucester today to see a couple of friends I know from Moldova (one Romanian, one Moldovan) who are at a Bible College there. Wonderful to see them (not least because they think I've lost weight since we last saw each other, hooray) and catch up. It was interesting to see though how difficult it is for me to change overall eating habits - not just the food itself, which apart from the fruit isn't all that different from what I eat anyway, but the places and times of eating. When I'm in a train station I always buy a bar of chocolate or a bagel or somesuch to munch while waiting for the train, and I usually end up with a packet of crisps from the buffet trolley as well, and I don't even think about these being extra to my 3 meals, it's just what you do when you're in that environment. So I had to twiddle my thumbs and buy a paper and read lots of my book and pretend that I didn't want to eat crap, even though I did really.

And then lunch at the college. I'm really not entirely sure what the veggie option was, I'm very sure though that it wasn't that healthy and would probably make Carol Vorderman have a fit. Oh well. A one-off won't hurt I'm sure. And it was interesting that I could tell straight away that the apple I had for afters wasn't organic - I've never been mad on apples, and wasn't that fussed about the organic ones I've been buying, but they're so much nicer than the one I had today.

Afterwards my friends and I played table football which was hilarious and then watched a film - it was really nice that we didn't have to entertain each other or spend hours catching up, we could just take up where we left off and relax in each other's company. Another film which was new to me (even though it was made in 1980) but definitely recommended - it's called "The Gods Must Be Crazy" and is about a Kalahari Bushman whose life is turned upside down when a Coke bottle falls out of the sky and he and his family assume it is a gift from the gods. There's a number of sub-plots, including a hilariously socially inept round the ladies elephant dung analyst and his seemingly doomed attempts to charm the woman of his dreams. And it's a wonderful commentary on culture and on the meanings we construct. There's apparently an equally funny sequel, so I must try to get hold of that.

At some point I really must fit in some culture this month. I'd hoped to have a quick glance round Gloucester Cathedral but one of my friends was definitely not in the cathedral mood, so we didn't do that in the end. And now I've finished my current book ("The Moldovans: Romania, Russia and the Politics of Culture" so not the lightest ever bedtime read) I'll dig out another (lighter) one for a legendary wibsite review. Try to contain your excitement :)
