I had a phone call this evening from my friend Dave, who's just got engaged. My immediate reaction (and apparently I wasn't the first) was to say "About bloody time too!" They were going out at uni (11 years ago I think) and have been on and off pretty much ever since. He had the best engagement story I've heard for a while - he proposed on Sunday at the top of Snowdon, but as it was blowing a gale and they were crouching behind a rock trying not to get blown away it wasn't so romantic. He bought the ring a day or two ago and was then going to catch a train up to hers to do the whole romantic thing - except that when he went to buy the train ticket his card wasn't accepted. He phoned his bank to find out why, and they said that they'd stopped the card as there was an unusual item on it that wasn't part of his normal buying pattern - namely a large amount of money spent in a Hatton Garden jewellery shop! Luckily he's just started work training to be a train driver, and was still in his uniform, so he went to the station manager, showed him the ring and blagged a free ticket, so was still able to make it to deliver his precious cargo to the intended recipient. Phew - all's well that ends well!
