I emailed the UpNorth tutors today to ask whether the Graduate Teaching Assistantship they'd talked about is actually on or not (that's my backup position if the ESRC don't show me da money). Seeing as I'm going to hand in my notice at work next week, it would be rather nice to know before I do so that I have a reasonable chance of actually doing the thing I'm giving it all up for. We'll see.
This evening I've tried booking a hotel room for when I go to holly's wedding. Now I don't have a huge problem with paying a single supplement if I take a room which isn't a single room - after all the hotels are businesses and they have to cover their costs and make their money and all that. But if I'd been sitting on a chair I'd have fallen off it when I spoke to one of the hotels who said that I would have to pay the entire double room price - of over £150 a night. I'm staying for two nights, and holly much as I love you and can't wait for the wedding and am really looking forward to a weekend in Sheffield, £300 would get me a week in Greece! Thankfully the next place I phoned was a third of the price so I have booked that instead, but it did get me annoyed. I feel crap enough about being single as it is, without being financially penalised for it. Grrrr.
