London 7/07

I'm shellshocked and stunned. I wasn't in the affected areas, but as the road I work on is one of the main routes into London the emergency services were speeding up there all day - the sound of sirens was a constant backdrop, and when we were in the office we all sat glued to the radio morbidly waiting for more news.

They're now saying it was only 4 explosive devices, not 6, as two of them exploded in tunnels between stations so the stations either side both thought it was them being targetted. Latest confirmed death toll is 37 but that's sure to rise. Seeing the pictures of that bus with its top ripped off, how could anyone near survive that?

The texts and emails soon started coming - was I alright, friends letting me know they were alright. Stories of so many near misses - someone from the Ship sleeping through his alarm (that did make me smile - just typical!), another friend deciding to cycle in today rather than use the tube, another friend texting to say she's usually at Edgware Road at that time but wasn't today.

God, what a mess. Have mercy on us.

One of the first blogs I thought of to go to was Random Acts of Reality. As it happened, he wasn't on duty today (though he volunteered locally so that the regular crews could head up to central London. Worth a read in the next day or so, I suspect.
