Interrupting the potted history to ask: what would you do if you were me?

I heard today from UpNorth university, and I now have to make a decision (argh!). I'll ask this on the Ship of Fools Thesis Support thread too, but no harm in asking a wider audience :D

My options are:

1. register straight away for PhD - advantage being that I could just sit in on MRes training courses (learning about research methods in social sciences - very useful indeed) but wouldn't have to do assessments which might make for a heavy workload in the first year, or
2. register for MRes in the first year (i.e. do the MRes training courses as above but also have to do the assessments) and then go on to PhD - advantage being an extra year at the end of the 4 years funding when I could still be 'writing up'.

Either way I also have to do the undergrad teaching (they're sending me the teaching folder so I will soon find out the topics - fingers crossed it's not economic principles of Russian collectivization or somesuch).

WWYD? Over to you ...
