For anyone who thinks that standards in education are slipping and today's students simply aren't as clever as they were in your day, here for your edification is a conversation I had today after the morning's lectures on Maths and Stats, with P who is another student in my department.

P: How did you find that?
Me: I think I'm going to cry.
P: Me too.
Me: That might have well have been in Russian for all I understood.
P: Yeah. Bleurgh.

Before today I had all sorts of lofty notions about attending stats/quantitative methods lectures because although I'm not going to be doing quantitative research I'm going to have to read other peoples' research and so if they've done quant research I need to have a vague idea what all those numbers mean. After today, my lofty notions have downsized somewhat.

I'm giving it up as soon as humanly possible (i.e. next week).
