Most days here the weather has been, let's say, changeable. This morning I left (having got up at 8.30 rather than 6, hooray! - it's 3pm and I still feel human!) and it was grey, damp and a bit windy. My poor London brolly has been totally finished off after just over a week here, so I really am going to have to invest in a sturdier one. While I was on the bus it seemed to get quite sunny, but by the time I arrived at my department I was trying (unsuccessfully) to shelter from horizontal rain. And now the skies are blue and there's hardly a cloud in the sky. All this leads to some difficult wardrobe dilemmas, which I'm still getting my head round.
In other news, the meeting with my supervisors went really well. They seemed impressed with my plans for the first year, and I'm relieved that they didn't seem to notice quite how much I was blagging and making it up as I go along. I've said it before on this blog, I'm sure doing a PhD is supposed to be really hard work, but I keep being amazed at how (so far) not hard work it is. I'm really quite worried I'm missing something.
I then went to see the lecturer in the department down the corridor, who is putting me in touch with a Romanian teacher. Said Romanian teacher turns out to be a qualified doctor, about my age, and by all accounts a great teacher, and given her health background she could well be very handy when it comes to thinking about my research. The lecturer also asked about my first degree, and when I (embarrassedly, as I've never used it) mentioned that it was in music, she looked really pleased and it transpires there's someone in the Music Dept here who's really into Romania and keen to meet people with links, and (as I understand it) does good dinner parties, so I can get some cultural as well as health input while I'm up here. Hooray!
And it's a Ship meet tonight. So that's good.
Not enough time to talk about the house - carpets were definitely "swirly poo" (see birdie's comment). I have more viewings of other properties lined up today and tomorrow.
