"If we were all Scots, we'd need two planets"

This was one of the headlines in yesterday's Metro, apparently "another two planets would be required if everyone lived their lives the way Scots do". The mortality (and presumably morbidity) rates up here are much lower than the rest of the UK, and I've already noticed what seems like a lot more obesity and that people seem to smoke more up here too, and that general trend of less care I think seems to be carried over into how we interact with our wider environment (of course that's a hugely sweeping generalisation, but noticeable enough to be noticeable, if you see what I mean). So even though my own little "bit" of Scotland isn't going to change the world, I am going to try really hard to live as sustainably as possible. I'm glad the Stately Pile is a ground floor flat, which means that I have a bit of the communal courtyard outside my kitchen window, so as well as my pots for plants I'm going to get a compost bin again (not that I have anywhere to spread compost, but I'll worry about that some other time), and try to be more energy efficient and all that sort of thing. I love city living, but especially here where so many people are in tenement flats with no garden it's harder to be creative - but not impossible. I'll welcome any other suggestions as to energy saving, plant promoting, consumption reducing ways of living in a tiny flat to chip away at the environmental iceberg here.
