I'm aware that I've not had a Weird Language Quirk of the Week for a few weeks, that's because there hasn't been anything particularly noteworthy. Either that or all of it is weird and quirky. But anyway, a propos of nothing but whilst thinking about Romanian it reminded me that the current Romanian Minister for Health, Eugen Nicolaescu, is a dead ringer for the curate from my last church in London.
I don't know what it is about Romania and Romanians. When I lived there in 94 there were so many lookalikes it was bizarre. They included church leaders, former acquaintances, and my favourite was my friend Ramona's mum who was the absolute double of Mrs Mangel from Neighbours.
It's not just Romania though. Steve Tomkins (of this parish) also has a doppelganger who goes to my gym. Hmm, maybe it's the Lewisham connection ... in all my years of living there I lost count of the number of people from Hither Green to Sydenham and beyond who came up to me convinced I was someone else and amazed that I looked so like whoever it was they kept mistaking me for. Must be something in the water.
