I've been looking at some of the, uh, quirky idiosyncratic stuff in the Stately Pile and am really quite bemused by my gas fire. You see, as we all know gas fires aren't the most aesthetically gorgeous item in the world, and so someone thought it would be a good idea to put a bit of plastic shaped like lumps of coal on top of the gas fire so that at the mere flick of a switch you get a realistic* burning coal fire effect. I could understand if this hid the gas fire bit, but you still see that, this plastic thing is on top of it so I see plastic coal and the gas fire. I really cannot conceive who could possibly have thought that that would make the fire more aesthetically tasteful.
And as if that's not bad enough, once it was installed in the flat, someone else thought that to improve it still further it would benefit from an enormous stone cladding fire surround that extends nearly the entire length of the wall.
Someone, somewhere, thought that was a thing of beauty. Isn't humanity inspirational in its diversity?
