I've never been a huge footie fan apart from the usual World Cup kind of thing, but since I've been in Scotland I've got a bit more into it, mainly because the football coverage on Radio Scotland is hilarious. Today is the final of the Scottish Cup up here (I understand there's a little minor cup going on south of the border today as well - good luck Tired&Emotional who's supporting the Hammers), and this year it really is a David and Goliath match, with Hearts (2nd in the league and in the Champions League next year) against 2nd division Gretna (population ~4,000). Of course the result isn't really in doubt, and the cynics are all saying that Gretna are only there because of being bankrolled by their rich benefactor (a guy called Brooks Mileson). But I have to say - I'd love Gretna to win. Brooks Mileson just comes across as the nicest guy on the planet when he's interviewed, with no airs and graces at all, and the thought of the little guys playing the uber-professionals makes me feel the same sort of emotion that I did when I watched "Cool Runnings" (I can't believe I just admitted that - I nearly cried in that film! lol). Go Gretna!
I kind of think I ought to pick a team to support more seriously. In London I kept half an eye out for my locals (Charlton Athletic) (well, technically my most local locals were Millwall, but thanks to some of their supporters they're not for the fainthearted). Here my localest locals are Queens Park, but as they're languishing in the 2nd division I never hear about them on the radio except in summary form. I'd like a team I can keep informed about without making any effort, which means either an SPL side or Gretna, on this season's coverage. I'm the fairest of fair-weather supporters, but I think it would be fun.
This is such a girly football post (reflecting a girly conversation I had a few weeks ago with some of the other postgrads in my department). But now that I own a manbag, I feel I need to reassert my girly credentials.
