Hi from Sibiu - I was right, it is next year's European City of Culture (for 2006 it is European Building Site). I'll just have to come back, as lots of my pictures of the centre (which is lovely) show buildings covered in scaffolding. It'll look great when it's all done though - very Germanic, and full of character.

Yesterday I had a PhD-related meeting, and have another set up for tomorrow, so I felt justified in using today to visit the fabulous Museum of Traditional Folk Civilisation - which is a huge open-air museum with authentic wooden houses, churches, mills, etc etc - some beautiful craftsmanship and a great way to spend a few hours. I've also discovered a great Italian restaurant which does vegetarian food other than pizza. So with any luck my (rapidly expanding) waistline will have a bit of a break from the relentless carb assault.

I like it here a lot. It's still too hot though. [/whiny Brit]
