I saw a really interesting movie yesterday, which I'm still thinking about a lot. It's called Stray Dogs and is set in Afghanistan in 2001 (it's directed by an Iranian woman, interestingly). It's the story of two young kids, Gol Ghoti (5ish) and her older brother Zahed, whose parents are in separate prisons in Kabul, and who try to commit a crime in order to be sent to prison themselves after the guards say they can no longer stay with their mum. The two kids are really stunning, but I think what has rocked me and meant that I can't get it out of my head yet is that throughout the film I had such a sense of hope, of the humanity and character and personality in the midst of such terrible chaos, and then suddenly the ending happened and it was suddenly bleak again, like reality hitting. Worth a look - I liked it a lot despite the bleakness. And those two kids were such a find.
