HD was supposed to have a job interview in Glasgow yesterday. So he drove up from down south - a 7 hour journey, when it goes well - on Friday evening, we had a lovely weekend, and then yesterday morning, just before he was due to leave to go to the interview, the agency phoned to tell him that the company had appointed someone they already knew to the position over the weekend, so not to bother going to the interview. So he has lost a day's pay (he is on a temp contract so paid hourly), we have both lost a day's worth of work (as otherwise I would have headed down south on Sunday and used yesterday to work, but instead we both spent all day yesterday driving) and we're both disappointed as it means that we still have to carry on commuting if we're to see each other. Once it gets to October and I have to be in Glasgow every week to teach it means that most weeks I shall have to spend a day travelling to see him, and although I will try not to let the travelling impinge on the writing up of my thesis, it is going to make it more difficult and more exhausting.
Don't get me wrong, I'm so happy to be married to a great guy, and just as he was prepared to give up his job and move to my neck of the woods (not to be sniffed at, let me tell you!) I'm happy to make sacrifices too. It's just that you do rather expect when you marry someone that you'll live at the same end of the country from them, and you do rather expect when you're writing a PhD thesis to not be uprooting and travelling every 5 minutes. I'm also just really frustrated that every time he has an interview in Glasgow this sort of thing happens, and so we're left in limbo yet again. Gah :(
