As my studies are in the field of central/eastern Europe, one thing I've done for quite some time is subscribe to various news sources which drop news about the region into my email inbox each day. My favourite is Radio Free Europe, as it has considerably more heavyweight type news stuff than some of the others (the other main one I subscribe to has plenty on Romanian tennis players and such like, but much less in the way of stuff relevant to me).
Sometimes the news can be a bit depressing - oh hooray another day of repression in Belarus, and parliamentary toings and froings in Ukraine, and Moldova and Transnistria still aren't recognising each other. So today I was delighted to read this particular little snippet:
"BOSNIAN TOWN TO BUILD CABBAGE MONUMENT. The Bosnian town of Bijeljina has announced plans to build a giant monument to cabbage to honor its most important crop, Reuters reported on November 15. "Our region is famous for cabbage. We very much appreciate this vegetable," said Goran Peric, the director of Bijeljina's tourist association. "We shall all support this idea." Peric added that the monument will be erected in time for the region's next cabbage festival, which is traditionally held in November." [RFE/RL newsline, 16.11.06]
I think that sounds lovely. I shall be very interested to see what a monument to cabbage looks like. Even though I don't much like cabbage myself.
