10th July 2011 This is one of the stained glass windows from the synagogue near where we live. I'd love to see inside one day - it's usually locked up, today I did see two or three guys going in, one just adjusting his yarmulka before doing so, I didn't dare ask if I could go in as I don't know if they were going to have a service or something, and I didn't want them to think I was being disrespectful. I remember when I was in Sibiu a few years ago having the chance to look round the synagogue there (it was usually locked too, but they were having a festival of Jewish culture so it was open to the public), the guy who showed me round was lovely and really seemed to appreciate people showing an interest (I think he was also a bit bemused at this English girl who could speak Romanian!), particularly as the Jewish community there is now so small. It was such a beautiful, peaceful, yet terribly sad place I thought. I'll have to have a nosy round the internet and see if I can find someone to email about visiting this one, it's so close yet such a mystery.
