24th June 2011 Today, after a bit of a (part satnav-related, part blonde driver-related) false start we picked up my parents from their hotel and took them to the island of Great Cumbrae, and specifically the town of Millport, for a day trip 'doon the watter'. We were indeed lucky with the weather, I am feeling a bit windswept now I'm back! After a meal we took a look at the Museum of the Cumbraes, then up to the Cathedral of the Isles (Europe's smallest cathedral - open today, unlike the last time we came here, it's very beautiful and peaceful inside), then we went to find another of Millport's attraction, the Crocodile Rock (3 guesses which song has been going round my head all afternoon!). This rock has been painted like this since around 1913, when legend has it local retired architect Robert Brown came out of the tavern one day, remarked that the rock looked very like a crocodile, then returned the next day and painted it. It has been repainted every so often, but the colours have remained the same since it was first painted. As well as the croc, we also saw seals - but they were a bit less garish :)
