I boarded the bus a bit apprehensively this evening, fully expecting when I got home that I'd have to go eyeball to, well, eyeballs, with Smudgie the Spider (definitely big enough to merit a capital S). Before I could worry about that though, I had to worry about the fact that the weird squealy noise I could hear as I walked up the street was my burglar alarm. The outside of the flat looked fine and undisturbed from the front, but I was a bit apprehensive as I opened the door. The hall looked fine, I switched off the alarm, and checked out every room - nothing at all. No break-in, nothing gone, nothing out of place - must have just been a glitch, but I have to say I felt a bit sick after the burglaries in my London house, it all came flooding back. And then I had to go into the bathroom (I remember last time I was burgled a huge spider appeared in the kitchen, it dropped down into the sink really suddenly as I was talking with the police officer and scared the life out of me, what is it with spiders and me and burglary things?). Smudgie's obviously lying low, as there was no sign of any arachnid activity. It wouldn't surprise me though if it was the spider that set the alarm going, I reckon it's big enough to activate the sensors!
Thank you Wet Kipper for the headgear suggestion. I may have to resort to an umbrella as I sit on the throne as I'm not sure any of my hats would provide adequate protection.
