One of my facebook friends (hi marmot!) wanted to see pictures of where I live. Her suggestion was the view from my window, but as that's not actually a very interesting view I decided to go a wee bit further away from home but retain that sense of "where I am". This is the bottom of Victoria Rd in Glasgow ('Vicky Rd' to the locals) which is our nearest main road. A few things of note: it seems we are going to get a Sainsbury's Local soon, in the boarded up building on the right that is now covered in orange hoardings. I have mixed feelings about this - on the one hand, the chance for some local decent quality supermarket food (our local supermarkets aren't exactly earth-shattering), but on the other hand, their food is quite expensive compared to other supermarkets, and the store it is replacing was a cheap-as-chips cafe and general stuff-for-sale shop which seemed to serve a real need in the community. It closed down once before, was boarded up then reopened for a while last year, but clearly it's now gone for good. One thing I don't have mixed feelings about though is the building next to it, the post office which closed down at the end of January. There is a sign about it closing and reopening somewhere else soon "following extensive public consultation"; I was really cross when I read that, as I think the "following" should really have said "despite" - I signed an enormous petition about keeping it open, and don't know a single person who thinks that it wasn't a really important local community resource in the right place. I'm very sad to see it go.
At the end of the road you can see the giant trees at the entrance to Queens Park.
