Pilates

I've not had the time or opportunity to go to a Pilates class, though I've wanted to for ages. So I got a DVD with a couple of Pilates workouts, and have just this minute finished the first one for the first time. My goodness, it's hard work! I can really feel where it's worked though, so hopefully it will be more successful than the gym has been at getting rid of my flabby abs and belly (the gym has worked wonders for my arms, shoulders, legs and backside, but the bit in the middle just isn't responding!). When I was watching the DVD I did think I'd prefer to be in a class - it was really strange listening to some bloke on the telly telling me "well done" in a terribly sincere tone of voice, and also it would be good if an instructor could actually see me to make absolutely sure I'm doing it right - but the advantage of doing it in the middle of my living room was that I was able to swear with abandon during the exercises (which really helped!) which I wouldn't be able to do in a class!

One exercise just made me laugh. Imagine: lie on your back, arms on the floor, and bring your legs up so they're pointing to the ceiling. Then slowly lower your legs over your head (keeping them straight) so that your toes touch the floor above your head. I tried, really I did, but the only way I'd ever get my legs over my head would be if someone pushed them there! Actually at that point I was really pleased nobody else was there to see - not the most ladylike or elegant I've ever been that's for sure. I think the technical term is "a sight for sore eyes".
