Had a mad panic this morning, when I finally got round to opening the letter (which arrived a week and a half ago) from my car insurers and found that they had cancelled my cover as of a couple of days ago as I'd not got round to sending them a document they'd been requesting for 2 months. In my (initial) defence, the letter they wanted (proof of no claims bonus) came with the quote from my previous company, and as that quote was so high and the new insurer's quote was so low, I'd just chucked away all the stuff from the previous company. I explained this to the new one, promised faithfully that I'd get in touch with the old insurer to get another copy, then promptly forgot all about it. As of 1 minute ago my new cover (with yet another new company) starts, so I can go and visit my family after all and go to work and do all those kinds of important things without breaking the law. Phew.
But I must say this habit of not opening boring official-looking envelopes is not a good one. I think I need to employ a PA.
