The Premier

On the way home from work I listened to the Senior State Finals of The Premier's Spelling Bee on my local ABC station. Congratulations to all the participants, and particularly the winner, a boy from Marrickville (an inner-city suburb of Sydney).

The final I listened to was for students in Years 5 and 6 of Primary School, which, if I recall correctly (it's a long time since I was there!), would be those from around 10 to 12. There were four finalists and they all did very well. The final two, the boy from Marrickville and a girl from Granville, a suburb in Sydney's west, battled for quite a long time after the other two finalists were eliminated. It was truly fascinating to listen to: I was, as the commentator suggested, yelling the answers from my car at the radio! But at that age, I don't think I would've had a clue with some of those words.

Despite it being a competition, it sounded fairly relaxed, well as relaxed as such a thing can be, and I'm assuming, and hoping, there wasn't the level of stress I saw in the very interesting documentary Spellbound: that truly showed me how serious some people take these competitions! But it was a very entertaining and insightful documentary.

Again: well done to all the participants. Well done.
