Getting Fit

At least attempting to.

I bought a bike (mine is silver) yesterday. I went in to the shop to have a look and see what was there -- as I am wanting to lose a bit of weight and get fitter, and the gym has lost its appeal -- and I came out with a new bike. I was very impressed with the staff at the shop: they were very helpful, very patient with my silly and ignorant questioning, and truly seemed as if they were interested. The fellow who helped me even helped me get the bike in my car after he saw me struggling across the street! Well done to ABC Bikes Liverpool.

I haven't regularly rode a bike since I was, say, 14, which was 14 years ago. I have done few rides since, in Hopfgarten, Austria (1998); Québec City to Chute Montmorency (2001); and over the Golden Gate Bridge to Sausalito (2003). Though I can't say I broke any speed records.

Last night I rode to my grandmother's place (about 5 minutes away), and I was up at 5:45am this morning (not too much earlier than my usual: I'm usually up by 6:15am) for a half-hour ride. Wonderful fun. Though I now have a greater appreciation for just how hilly where I live is. It was enormous fun whooshing down the hills; and darn hard work coming back up them!

I pray I'll continue at it. There are a number of bicycle tracks near me, through parks and alongside creeks. It was nice, at around 6:00am, to pass a creek and a pond and to hear the frogs ribbit-ing and the kookaburras laughing as only they can. Our state Roads and Traffic Authority have also printed various maps of cycleways which I look forward to exploring.
