Memoirs of a Geisha opened last night here. And I and two friends, and friends of theirs, went to see it. We went to the 21:20 session, and it didn't finish until just before midnight! I'm not entirely awake at work today: thank God it's Friday.
But, despite the length, it didn't drag or feel long at all. I loved it. I haven't read the book, so I didn't know what to expect: apart from the oddity of having two very well-known Chinese actresses [Michelle Yeoh and Ziyi Zhang] playing Japanese women. But that strangeness soon passed, and I was caught up in the world of 1940s Japan.
The scenery was breathtaking; the cinematography outstanding; and the acting -- absolutely wonderous. A very good storyline as well: it never dragged or felt as if it was stretching the bounds of belief. Wonderful dance scenes as well. But I think the costumes and scenery, and the fantastic music that served as the soundtrack, were my highlights. A great movie.
