Looking east into the sun, but you get an idea of the length of these trains going from and to the coal mines in the Hunter Valley and the ports in Newcastle: up to 1.5 kilometres (0.93 miles) in length.
Wikipedia articles state over 70 million tonnes of coal is shipped through the Newcastle Port facilities each year -- making it the largest coal exporting port in the world: with capability for 103 million tonnes a year. There is also a move for, and resident and environmental movements against, a new, fourth, coal terminal to meet with increasing energy demands around the world.
