Growing Nieces

It still takes me a moment or two to realise Skye is 7 [almost 7-and-a-half], despite her height, her language level and what she tells me she does in school. I cannot believe 7 years have gone since she was born...it has flown by. She reads wonderfully aloud, and always reads a book before going to bed; she writes stories which I love to read; she can rattle off some times-tables; she checks her children's encyclopaedia and the Internet (with supervision) for school work and research: and I helped her put together a small PowerPoint presentation on pollution she delivered to the class -- and she quickly picked up what to do and what could be done. She is doing so well at school, and definitely has a love of learning. She is also so considerate and compassionate: and far more towards her younger siblings than I was with my sister and her mum in terms of inclusion and time doing what they want.

Eden is the cheeky one. She loves to play games and loves to tell stories: adding a "Only joking!" if gullible, or playing-along [far more the former than latter!], Uncle Ian says he believes it. She is learning her numbers and letters, a bit later than Skye did as with more children and more housework and study pressures it was harder for my sister to devote the time she did to Skye. But she is coming along, and in terms of personality and caring, while all of the girls have such love for one another, Eden always makes sure Jessie is included and gets her time to be in charge or do what she wants. A beautiful thing to see. Eden is also the most coordinated and sporty one: she is very good at games with balls and throwing and catching.

Jessie is a lovely chubby one still...who loves her food and loves Hide n Seek. While I see her peek while she counts, she pretends she does not know where we are at first, and then rushes over to find us. She also loves books, bright and beautiful picture books. Her current-favoured phrase is "My favourite": and while I am told zebras are her favourite in a book, the next second lions are also "my favourite", then elephants, giraffes, and so on... as she points to every single animal. During nightly Bible Story time, she comes up and sits next to me, proudly exclaiming, "I sit with Uncle Ian". She does go to mummy shortly thereafter, but even a moment with her and hearing her say that makes me rather mushy inside. She also likes to pray; while the words may not come out, you can see and hear she is trying.

I've said it many times...but I am blessed to spend this time with them. And my sister and brother-in-law have done and are doing a great job: my hat and much else off to parents -- a tough, though I know rewarding, but still very tough, vocation.
