I have been listening to Slate's podcast Manners for the Digital Age since Patrick Cox, the host of PRI's wondrous language podcast The World in Words, mentioned it. Both great and interesting podcasts. And I've just seen Slate also has a language podcast -- oh good! I will also remember you ferijen as the one who got me started big time on podcasts through those on BBC Radio 4. :)
With Manners for the Digital Age I find myself agreeing more with Emily (an advice columnist) than Farhad (the technology guru), even though I work in IT. And something Farhad said in an earlier podcast on finding out your date is not who you think they are struck me: "I think we've mentioned it before that if you are going out with someone and they don't have a Facebook profile, you should be suspicious." Leaving aside dating, and some concern as to that statement, I wondered if potential employers might be concerned if they Googled me and fond nothing. So off I wrote. And this week's podcast is on my question!
Apart from some confusion I must've caused with my rambling e-mail in terms of my profession, all that was attributed to me was what I wrote. Farhad approached it from the point of view that at least having a profile lets you retain some control over what is out there, as well as indicating it is, in his view, more and more expected we all have a social network profile. Emily stated she did not think it mandatory. They both addressed a concern of my (OCD) self in terms of trying to keep up-to-date with it all. And Emily raised a great point about introverts, of which I am one; I love people, but I love my own time more I think, and need it to recharge and prepare for social situations. Interesting answers, as always; something for me to think about. As always your thoughts are always welcome too.
And on social situations and my introvert nature, after prayer, some pondering, with a focus on examination of motives, and a new opportunity which arose, I gained some direction and insight in my job pondering. I have a technical interview tomorrow after a successful first interview on Monday, and value your prayers for wisdom and guidance in the interview and in the decision making.
