Avast, me hearties!

I went to see the new Pirates of the Caribbean movie, Dead Man's Chest, tonight: and loved it. Such a wonderful movie: very funny, some wonderfully silly scenes, and amazing effects. And Johnny Depp is great again as Captain Jack Sparrow: his facial expressions are worth the price of admission alone. Well worth seeing.

I went to a relatively new cinema complex at Macarthur [south-west of Sydney: on my way home from work]: wow! Certainly different from most others: far more modern and open in the foyer, a huge screen and more comfortable and spacious seating. I am guessing this is due to the DVD market biting into their takings. But I think the cinemas have responded well: Macarthur cinema had a café inside, and as well as snacks and drinks you are now able to buy hot food and take it in: something that, at least in Sydney and my experience, has only recently happened -- and generally only if you paid for it by going to one of the "Exclusive" (higher-paying) sessions. I believe the new cinema complex at Parramatta [west Sydney] is similar.

Not sure about all other countries, but movie-going in Australia is a bit more expensive than I recall from visits in Dublin, Stockholm, Berlin, Toronto and Edmonton [how is that for a variety of places?] Just over $15 for a session. So it is often a rare treat for me. And it is often just me: I go to the movies on my own most times. It's not that I couldn't ask: I generally make a decision when driving somewhere to go and see a movie and just do it.

There are two other movies I'd very much like to see at the moment: The White Massai and the Australian film Jindabyne. I hope to see them in the next few weeks.
