With our Coptic Orthodox brothers and sisters, I give thanks for the gift the Lord gave the world, and the Coptic Orthodox in particular, in the life, preaching and witness of His Holiness Pope Shenouda III. May his memory be eternal!
I must confess to a great amount of ignorance with regard to his life; it is only thanks to articles such as this one from the Coptic Church's Diocese of Melbourne and the witness of an Orthodox brother, S, that I have begun to read and hear about the greatness of the man, who was called a second Athanasius for his commitment to truth and a second Chrysostom (golden-mouthed) for his eloquence and preaching. And reading overview of his life, its joys and many struggles, including enforced exile by the late Egyptian President Anwar El-Sadat, I am more ashamed that I did not much of this wonderful man of God But thanks be to God I can find out much though the Internet.
S (and please of your mercy pray for S who is making some determinations regarding future study and ministry...) told me to search YouTube for "Pope Shenouda love": and I did. And I pass it on to you.. Scriptural; simple and clear teaching -- yet calling us to a great standard; and beautiful words giving us a challenge to live a life of love to God. With thanks to the translator, this small clip containing a meditation on love by His Holiness Pope Shenouda III shows that truly he was golden-mouthed and an engaging preacher; and I will seek out more of his sermons and writings.
