I ventured a bit farther out today: about 5 minutes from my place. I walked closer into the Liverpool CBD and along Liverpool Mall, where there is a whole host of cafés. I picked one, Bona Fides, and ordered a Chicken Schnitzel roll and a Flat White.
The food and the service were fantastic: a fresh roll with fresh vegetables and a lovely strong coffee. I also found the goings-on around me very interesting also. A bit farther down the Mall were groups, three or four, of elderly men playing chess. There is a 'giant chessboard' as part of the Mall, but I imagine the pieces may only be available on weekdays. These men had brought their own chessboards and pieces and seemed to be having a great old time. A bit closer were a number of kids playing in a kids' area, under a very warm sun and clear blue, and such a beautiful blue, sky.
Bona Fides had a good number of customers, and there were clearly visible groups. Adults I guess at 35+ were well-represented by men having a coffee or soft drink together while talking and looking through newspapers in the language of the country they came from [as an aside: such newspapers are great, especially when you are learning a language -- as they deal with current events you have at least a bit of a start in understanding]. A few families were also present, as were a few teenagers or men in their early 20s who were, like the older men, looking through community newspapers and talking. Many of the customers must be regulars as they and the staff often talked. I found it interesting to, from my table facing out to the mall, catch a glimpse of others in the midst of a Saturday morning.
It being a warm day, I grabbed some gelato, coffee and macadamia nut, from a shop on the way home. A very nice end to a very pleasant Saturday morning.
