Yesterday (Sept 27) was the Feast of St Mark, Apostle and Evangelist. St Mark also has a feast on April 25.
As I may've mentioned before, St Mark's Gospel is my favourite: I know St John's is beautiful, and it is, but I love the style of Mark: or at least the sense of the style the translators have given me as I know no Greek! "Immediately" and other such words are used constantly, which gives a sense of everything happening quickly and without delay. The division of the book into two sections, split by Peter's confession of Christ. Mark's incidental details, such as telling us Jesus was asleep on a cushion [Mark 4:38] or the extra detail when compared to Matthew and Luke in the healing of the man at Gerasa. We do need the other Gospels for further teaching and for further aspects of Christ's life and its meaning for us -- Mark does not give us Christ's detailed teaching: that is why the Church decided to have the four Gospel accounts we have: but Mark is the Gospel I continually return to read.
St Mark is also counted as one of the Seventy sent out by Jesus in Luke 10.
A Happy and Blessed Feast Day (for yesterday) to all, and to all Marks in particular!
