You'll be pleased to know that the response of those at Bible Study last night to that particular verse in the Gospel of Thomas was much the same as those who made comments: a very odd, and even offensive, verse -- and clearly not acceptable in Christian tradition.
Please, of your mercy, remember G and his family: his father A passed away on Friday night after a short battle with lung cancer. He made his confession and received communion before he passed. May his memory be eternal!
I dropped into my parents' place after church, and my mum had bought me a Boatswain's Call while she was up in the Hunter: she saw it, thought it was interesting and unusual, and thought I'd like it: and right she was -- as mum's often are. It looks rather like the one on the right, and came with a little booklet detailing its history [it was the only method, other than the human voice, to pass orders on a ship], the various calls that can be made, as well as how to hold it and make some noise. Perhaps this should be the instrument I take up. :)
