Last night I saw My Best Enemy, screening as part of the 2006 Italian Film Festival. I love attending the various film festivals that come around Sydney, from Italian to French to German to Arabic -- it is always fascinating to get a glimpse of the movies coming out of countries we generally don't get to see. Though kudos must go to our multicultural broadcaster, SBS (which is a free-to-air channel: how lucky are we!), which regularly broadcasts series, movies and documentaries from countries where English is not the national language. [Though I'm not happy that they've started putting ads in during shows, as opposed to between them, but that's another topic.]
Back to My Best Enemy: highly recommended. The cinema was in stitches throughout, and it is one of the best nights I've had at the cinema for a long time. The movie is the story of two enemies coming together because of their love of a girl: one of them is the father and one is the boyfriend. As well as the hilarity, there are moments of great drama and sadness, and the movie sweeps you along at a rapid rate: so many things happen, and it's a true pleasure and joy to be taken along for the ride. If you're in Sydney, or one of the other cities where the festival is playing, or if you see it elsewhere, I can heartily recommend seeing it.
And the Italian experience kind-of continues today: my manager brought in various Sardinian biscuits made with amaretto...mmmmm. Off to get my morning coffee, well, my second one, to enjoy with the biscuit.
