The race that stops a nation, as it is also called, the Melbourne Cup is held on the first Tuesday in November.
In a sense, it does stop the nation: although it is only a public holiday in Melbourne, every workplace I have been at puts on a nice lunch and office sweeps are always present. The three horses I've been given are ones I've never heard of, so I doubt my wallet will be heavier when I leave here today. Lunch today was chicken, ham, jacket potatoes and a variety of salads: very nice. Most people will make their way to the boardroom at 3pm to watch the race on tv. And then it's back to work for the rest of the day.
