The first two [I have a 5-film pass] films I've seen as part of the Alliance Française French Film Festival. And two great movies indeed.
Last night I saw Mon meilleur ami (My Best Friend) is a very enjoyable comedy about a friendless and arrogant man who as part of a bet says he will produce his best friend by the end of the month. After failing with a number of his contacts, he settles for a taxi driver, but, naturally, things don't go according to plan. The "Who Wants To Be a Millionaire" scene is worth the admission alone. Good fun.
Nouvelle chance (Oh La La!) was an utterly engrossing and delightful drama. Four main characters, from a variety of walks of life, are brought together for the staging of a play based on the correspondence of an eighteenth-century French hostess and art patron, the Marquise du Deffand (whose writing is utterly captivating and vivid: I wish I could read it in the original French!) A great drama, with many ups and downs, and wonderful portrayals of characters and their relationships.
On the way home I stopped by the Dutch Shop [their website seems to be broken: I could only find this German page(!) about it] to get some of that salted liquorice for a work colleague. I must say I do not enjoy it, but am happy to get it for others. I did see some Lebkuchen left over from Christmas on special and got some of that.
