Brrrrr...

A nice dinner at my paternal grandmother's tonight: my uncle cooked up some corned beef with various spices, some delicious potatoes, cabbage with nutmeg, and a selection of roast vegetables: mmmm. I'm very content.

The seemingly endless Sydney summer has come to a chilly end this week. I'm sure those of colder climes will roll their eyes at what I call cold, but, out west, it's dipping below 10°C of a morning -- and supposed to get to 5°C overnight: and being rather chilly during the day. From our pleasant 20-25°+ temperatures, it's a shock to the system.

Sydney does have mild winters: out west here we have days of 15-20°C and nights, while occasionally getting to 0°C and below, are usually around 0-5°C: it's warmer in the City overnight, and generally slightly cooler in the day.

I do love the cooler weather though: give me a freezing day over a hot, humid one. And there are few things I love more than lying in bed reading a book or watching TV/a film with winter pyjamas and a hot chocolate. Tanks to a colleague at work, I've discovered a rather nifty DVD mail-out rental business: I've used it for about a month (getting, among others, Spooks, To The Manor Born, Hero, and Dora for my niece). Spirited Away was delivered today and I'm looking forward to finally seeing a movie I've wanted to for a long time.

And, winter always brings in the prospect of a snow trip down south [though it's almost as cheap to head over to New Zealand]. The snow season here officially starts on the Queen's Birthday Weekend, the second weekend in June (in all states bar WA which celebrates it in September: we're nothing if not confusing: our 3 time-zones turn to 5 when Daylight Savings kicks in as some 6 states/territories spring forward and 2 don't) -- the UK may not have a weekday public holiday for HRH, but we're not giving up a day off work!

Roll on winter.
