Romulus, My Father

Third, again, at trivia tonight: another $10- to spend on food/drinks.

Last night I went off to Dendy Newtown for an advance screening of Romulus, My Father: and what a fantastic film it is. Director Richard Roxburgh (who is for ever implanted in my mind as the Duke from Moulin Rouge) and producer Robert Connolly introduced the film, and then answered a fair few questions, on all topics and all matters, from the audience.

The film: it was tragic, it was dramatic, it had moments of joy and laughter amid the drama and troubles, and it did end with hope -- the hope of a brighter future to come. And the knowledge of a deep and abiding relationship between father and son. Kodi Smit-McPhee was outstanding as young Rai, and all the actors, Eric Bana, (the wonderful, so think I) Franka Potente and Marton Csokas in particular, gave amazing performances. The quietness of Romulus; the feelings of alienation and displacement of Christina; the constant friendship of Hora -- characters that drew you in and kept you in. It may be trite, but true stories are so immensely interesting, and are beyond all imaginings of fiction.

I am definitely going to get the book. Highly recommended: and I do hope it makes it overseas soon so many of you may have a chance to see it.
