The latest episode of Enough Rope and the new Australian film The Home Song Stories.
Why Enough Rope? Young Australian of the Year Tania Major who talks openly and honestly, painfully honestly, about the crises in Aboriginal communities today. I cried...and cried; the shameful episodes are not only in the past...there is much going on today that pains: Lord, have mercy. Though with young people like Tania around, I am confident that the future will be brighter.
Why The Home Song Stories? A truly amazing Australian film about a glamorous nightclub singer who comes to Australia in the 1970s and struggles, with her two young children, to survive. Amazing not only in terms of the acting, but the storyline also: particularly as it is based on Tony Ayres' [the writer and director] own life. It is not a pick-me up movie: it is a heart-wrenching journey, but there is hope and joy -- and a number of laughs, particularly from Tom's dream sequences! -- to be found. For those overseas I do hope it gets a screening outside Australia -- I know it has been at a number of film festivals overseas. It does deserve to be seen by a wide audience.
