I'm enjoying rading through the Penguin Book of Hymns which I've borrowed from the library. It covers Western hymns, and it has been a great joy to learn more about the history of both the writers, the composers of the tunes, and the background to the production, acceptance and use of the hymns throughout history. I may share a few of my favourites [I'm up to 50 out of 150, and I'd say 30 or so I've read abut already are firm favourites], or perhaps share a few of the hymns that were new to me and which I found moving, beautiful or simply interesting.

Looking forward to taking my niece up to the Zig-Zag Railway next Friday [I'm taking the day off work]. The Zig-Zag a railway built between 1866 and 1869 to allow trains to cross the last part of the Blue Mountains. It was replaced in 1910 by a number of tunnels, and re-opened by enthusiasts in 1975. Next Friday and next weekend they have a Thomas the Tank Engine steam train, with a jumping castle, merry-go-round, and other activies, and I thought it would be fun -- for her as much as me I confess: I do love trains, and steam trains in particular.

A dear friend arrives in Sydney from the US today, after spending some time in Brisbane. Looking forward to catching up with him: not looking forward to being dragged along to play volleyball, one of his favourite sports (long-suffering readers may remember this post when I asked for suggestions to avoid the sport: we'll see how I get out of it this time).
