From the BBC:

Russia is holding a series of ceremonies to mark the 50th anniversary of the start of the space age.

In 1957 the first man-made satellite, Sputnik, was launched by what was then the Soviet Union.

The Russian Space Web, run by Anatoly Zak ["writer, artist and 3D animator"], has a host of information on Sputnik -- among many other things. Well worth a look.

I'm fascinated by space, and astronomy in general. I have many books related to the cosmos, and to the history of astronomy: I truly find "the heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork" [Psalm 19:1]. And what glory, and what handiwork, indeed!
