I saw Atonement at the cinemas last night. The book had been a favourite of mine since I read it several years ago, and I eagerly looked forward to seeing an interpretation of it on the big screen.
I was very impressed: from my recollection, which may not be 100%, the film quite closely followed the book and seeing a story I found fascinating, if not rather heart-wrenching, on the big screen was wonderful. The cinematography was amazing, the music [particularly the 'type-writter noises' throughout, harking back to Briony's writing] lovely, and the cast were great. Given the subject matter, "enjoyable" is probably not the right word, but I found it a very good movie and recommend it, and the book. However, if -- like a colleague who saw it and was not impressed -- you like your happy and joyful stories, and endings, perhaps it is not the movie for you.
