The exhibit I saw with two friends at the Art Gallery of NSW today. It was a wonderful exhibition, and I even managed to learn a bit. I am rather ignorant when it comes to art, in all its forms, but I do enjoy looking -- and broadening my horizons and knowledge.
My favourite three works of Monet's were Meadow with haystacks near Giverny, Snow at Argenteuil and Valley of the Petite Creuse -- though it is hard to pick. I loved the light, particularly the glimpses of sunlight under the trees at the right in Meadow with haystacks near Giverny; the snow effect and setting of Snow at Argenteuil transported me there; and I simply found Valley of the Petite Creuse, together with the Valley of the Creuse (Sunlight Effect) and Valley of the Petite Creuse simply beautiful to look at. But indeed they all were.
From other artists, which included Renoir, Cézanne, Sisley, Pisarro and Degas [I only had heard of the first two], I particularly liked Pissaro's Pontoise, the Road to Gisors in Winter [I must be in a winter mood!]; the seemingly 'snapshot' of a moment in time and of everyday life grabbed me. But, again, fascinating paintings and sculpltures. It was also interesting to read, and see, the influence of Japanese art, particularly the woodblock prints, on the impressionists.
Before seeing the exhibition I had a nice lunch with my friends and a good catch-up. On the way back to my car and their house, we stopped off at The Cupcake Bakery where I got a vanilla cupcake and a lemon and mint iced tea. A nice end to a very pleasant afternoon.
