The final two films I had sessions two with my 5-film pass to the German Film Festival. though as I enjoyed the films so much I bought a ticket to an additional screening of Keinohrhasen [Rabbit without Ears] to continue the German fun.
And Along Came Tourists [Am Ende kommen Touristen] was a fascinating look at several people trying to find their place in the present, with the struggles and demons on the past still having their influence. It was set in the Polish town of Auschwitz, and the horrors that occurred there do, naturally, form a central part of the story. The only fault I found was that I didn't end up caring much for the characters -- I did not believe they were well-developed, and a number of themes were not as developed as I may've hoped. That said, the acting was superb and the themes developed were interesting, and the covering of the impact of the Holocaust and the issues that are still being dealt with is a difficult subject to achieve fully and I think a good job was done. A very interesting movie.
Runaway Horse [Ein fliehendes Pferd] was a fun movie about comfortable relationships, where there exists little real communication or shared interests -- and what happens when this begins to be turned upside down by the introduction of another couple to their lives. Superb cinematography of Lake Constance, some great characters, and an interesting, and often humorous, storyline made this a very enjoyable film, as well as a challenging one at times that forced some confrontation of dealing with the issues arising from these "comfortable relationships". I particularly liked the way the film ended, with the final scene rather moving.
Before the film Runaway Horse, the interesting, and wonderfully odd!, short film Lovesick [Liebeskrank] was shown: as the summary states, "Pain in the heart, never-drying tears and turned-around heads are difficult to treat, but fortunately not incurable." Amusing and a very nice story.
