I spent the great majority of yesterday at the library studying Functional Grammar. Unfortunately the lure of free internet access had me throwing down my textbooks at every opportunity to wile the time away on the internet.

"Functional Grammar", at least in my limited knowledge, builds on traditional grammar but seeks to define patterns of language use and puts these together with the things you want to do with language. It was quite confusing to me at first, and still is, but I can see its benefits -- especially as I consider my future career as a teacher of English as a Second Language. People need to be able to express what they want, what they feel, what they want to communicate -- hopefully this approach will help them.
