Today's Gospel reading was Luke 7:11-16: Jesus' raising of the widow of Nain's son. In terms of Jesus' miracles, I've always seen them as simply confirming His Divinity and power over all. Our priest gave me extra pause for thought.
He mentioned the prevalence of women interceding for the raising of their dead and Jesus' compassion for those women who have lost their children: not only in the Gospels, but in the Old Testament as well. In addition to Jesus' compassion for the widom of Nain, we see Jesus' compassion in Mary's pleas regarding Lazarus and in the raising of Jairus' daughter and returning her to her parents. In the Old Testament we see both Elijah and Elisha raising back to life a widow's son. It is always a blessing to me to see new insights, and to focus on the way women related and were related to in Scripture. I think they've been sidelined all too often at times (at least in some places I was at).
Thanks be to God.
