I had a basic idea of what the the musical was about, but I definitely was not expecting to be blown away by the songs as much as I was: as was the friend who went with me. A wide variety of songs, ranging from the downright silly and hilarious, to the most moving and tear-inducing songs one could ever hear. I had heard Bring Him Home before, sung by RyanDan, but I did not know where it came from. As soon as I heard the opening chords last night I knew what was coming: and was definitely not disappointed: the man playing Valjean was amazing, as were Javert, Éponine, Cosette, young Cosette, and in fact everyone -- Madame Thénardier was particularly and wonderfully wicked and over-the-top.
Clear to me was the theme of mercy running throughout: Valjean's mercy, generosity and compassion on all whom he met. His quest for redemption is a moving thing to watch, particularly as he never can fully escape his past, with Javert, among others, constantly appearing and reminding him of past crimes and actions. While there are many moving scenes and song, to me the tears were more prevalent [yes: I weep in theatre and at movies!] when the souls of Fantine and Éponine arrive to take Valjean to Paradise, and Do You Hear the People Sing? is sung.
A huge "Well done!" to all involved with the Holroyd Musical & Dramatic Society for their fantastic and deeply moving performance; I definitely am going to have to see more productions from "amateur" societies.
Tonight, an altogether different music -- Eurovision. I am aware who won, but that won't stop me from enjoying the fun -- especially with Terry's commentary. And I look forward to what the Middle East and North Africc can produce for their Song Contest, whenever this will be launched.
