First Teaching Practice

Today was the big day. I was extremely nervous before-hand, and even as the class started my nerves continued to show. But once I began the first activity [on objects you find in a house: bed, fridge, TV, spoon, etc.], I started to feel a bit better. I needed to ask the teacher for some advice on how to continue the lesson when I finished at the 50 minute mark rather than the hour mark, but apart from that I generally followed what I had planned, with a few alterations as the class progressed.

I felt I did alright, and my mentor teacher's comments seemed to reflect that. Big boosts to my self-esteem came when she said my materials were well-produced and very appropriate, my movement around the classroom to check on students was done well, and I had a very good rapport with the students. Some things to check for next time include stretching out activities and writing on the whiteboard side-on, rather than with my back showing. I feel relieved, and I also feel a sense of accomplishment. It was only one hour, but it was a big step for me -- having never taught before and coming from a wildly different career (IT). Thanks be to God.

Oh. It is also my birthday today. 28. Ever-nearer to the big 3-0. Not big on birthdays so I'll be doing nothing. Except finishing off my Easter eggs. ;-)
